FRIDAY November 4th, 2011
Welcome and Introductions:
Welcome from Kwantlen University and Amanda Coolidge, the Chair of the Steering Committee for ETUG (SCETUG) and an Instructional Designer at Royal Roads University.
Stillness in Motion: An Experiential Workshop on Mindfulness and Creativity
Presenters : Ross Laird (Kwantlen University/rosslaird.com), Brian Williams (DIYDharma.org) and Scott Leslie (BCcampus)
Description :
In our current social and educational contexts we are provided with many opportunities for distraction and information overload. Many of us are left feeling anxious, stressed, and scattered. Is it possible to move through this fast-paced world with a calm and clear presence? In this workshop, participants will be led through a variety of practices that cultivate mindfulness and creativity and which can be applied to the challenges of education, technology, and modern life.
Journeying the Professional Development Landscape through Interactive Theatre
Presenters: Bonita Bray, Cindy Underhill, Luisa Canuto, Zack Lee (UBC, Centre for Teaching Learning and Technology); Contributors: Judy Chan (co-ordinator), Hanae Tsukada, Isabeau Iqbal and Mali Bain
Description :
Life would be wonderful if everyone recognizes the potential of education technology and uses it appropriately to improve students’ learning, but this is not LIFE. In this highly interactive workshop, a group of four amateur actors and actresses will perform a project meeting that does not go quite as intended. You will have the opportunity to develop strategies, hone your skills and ‘rehearse for the future’.
Evernote – Finally
Presenters : Lynda Williams (SFU) and Jason Toal (SFU).
Description :
Organizing information has never been more demanding but making a commitment to a solution has overheads. That’s why I resisted adopting Evernote until my start with SFU, September 12, 2011. Learn from my journey and share your own strategies or questions with the group throughout workshop. Hands on components include working through simulation in Evernote of “new job start” situation where new people, memberships, accounts and projects pour in. Illustrates use of JING to screen clip, and Evernote’s features such as email forwarding and web clipping; also best practices such as “heap” strategy for reducing number of notebooks and ability to evolve tagging. Evernote has over 11,000 million users (http://www.forbes.com/sites/nicoleperlroth/2011/07/13/why-evernote-is-winning-with-the-soft-stuff/) and synchronizes across web, PC, Mac, iPad and mobile apps. It captures and organizes text, images, web sites, files and audio notes. Also supports sharing for working collaboratively.
Faculty Development: Mindful Journey or Bad Trip?
Presenters : B.J. Eib (RRU) and Mary Burgess (RRU)
Description :
This session will be a continual mix of presentation and conversation as BJ & Mary present RRU’s current Faculty Development plan and the strategies that brought it about. Throughout the session, large and small groups will discuss and share specific way-stations, itineraries, baggage, etc. that we all encounter as we move from short, perhaps random, day-trips to longer, more mindful Faculty Development journeys. We will share key artifacts of our Faculty Development Program as takeaways.
A Grassroots Approach to E-portfolios
Presenters : Lesley McCannell (Kwantlen) and Meg Goodine (Kwantlen)
Description :
What does it take to implement a program-wide eportfolio system? The Bachelors of Human Resources Management Degree program at Kwantlen Polytechnic University is in its second year of using the Mahara eportfolio platform for a program-wide eportfolio initiative. This initiative has been a grassroots effort with limited institutional resources or investment. We will share our story – the curriculum change required to incorporate eportfolios into each course, the challenges associated with supporting technology that is in “pilot phase”, the student and Faculty reactions, our lesson learned and next steps.
