[Institutional Report] JIBC
Contributed by Naz Maghsoudi, Student and faculty Development Coordinator, JIBC
Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) is Canada’s leading public safety educator. Our specialized programs lead to certificates, diplomas, bachelor’s degrees and graduate certificates in Policing, Investigations, Emergency Management, Firefighting, Paramedicine, Sheriffs, Corrections, Counselling, Leadership, Mediation, Conflict Resolution, and Driver Training. JIBC also provides customized contract training to domestic and international governments, agencies and organizations. Our approach to education emphasizes applied learning and realistic simulations, delivered by instructors who are experienced practitioners. Our students’ work makes communities safer, and helps people in need, throughout B.C., across Canada and around the world.
Each year, about 28,000 students learn at JIBC. They are young people starting a career, volunteers wanting to make a contribution to a safer and more just society, and experienced professionals looking to continue their education and expand their skillsets. They are paramedics, firefighters, police officers, sheriffs, correctional and probation officers. They are emergency management specialists. They are counsellors and volunteers who help people heal and recover, and business and community leaders striving to improve the effectiveness of their organization.
JIBC has 6 campuses, which are located in New Westminster, Okanagan, Victoria, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. One of JIBC’s strategic initiatives is technology enhanced and distributed learning. Our students, and the clients with whom we work, desire and deserve up-to-date reality-based training and education. With increased technology and a global knowledge-based economy, information is developed and shared from around the world instantaneously. This information often makes us examine whether there are better ways of doing things.

The Center for Teaching, Learning and Innovation is running a pilot project called innovation classroom at the New Westminster Campus. This classroom is designed for innovative teaching and learning. It is equipped with WePresent, a wireless presentation system, a TV screen, a Belkin Document Camera and Swivl, a robotic lecture capture device.
We are also in the process of implementing our new student information system, Collegue® by Ellucian. The system is up and running in a Test and Production environment. So far we had hosted four successful “Introduction to Colleague Basic Navigation” training sessions and expect to offer a few more in 2015.
