Online Instructor Professional Development for a Continuing Studies Unit

This session will provide an overview of the planning and development of a first-time Professional Development workshop for non-continuing (i.e., contracted) online instructors at Continuing Studies at the University of Victoria.
At the Division of Continuing Studies (DCS), subject matter specialists are contracted by DCS to instruct the online courses offered by the various Program units in DCS.  Because of the nature of their appointments, these specialists are not eligible to access professional development opportunities at UVic.  Therefore, the Distance Education Services unit of DCS adapted a model from one of DCS’ Program units to create workshops for all online instructors in DCS, including many instructors who have little or no experience teaching (online or otherwise).  In addition to creating ProD opportunities for these instructors, these workshops also initiated a peer support network among instructors who are hired by several different program units and who don’t normally have the chance to interact with each other.
During this session, participants will be invited to share their own experiences with planning and delivering professional development opportunities for groups of instructors who never see each other, and who may or may not have any past experience with online teaching, or with teaching of any kind.
