[T.E.L.L. December Summary] Digital Badges 1
Peter Rawthorne presented our first T.e.l.l. session this year with a wonderful overview of Digital Badges.
The session on Tuesday Dec. 4th was the first of two webinars on the topic in addition to very active and extensive discussions and applied activities (homework!) in the accompanying SCoPE Seminar Dec 1 – 15.
During the lunch and learn webinar, Peter introduced us to the concept of Digital Badges and some of the systems emerging for issuing and displaying badges such as Mozilla Open Badges, Khan Academy or FourSquare to name a few. It is still early on in how badges might be used in traditional or alternative education or to acknowledge skills, learning and experiences outside the formal education system.
Discussion in the webinar chat was far-ranging and varied. Topics debated included: the ability of badges to make learning visible, the question of how best to assess the quality and depth of learning, and the merits of badges to contribute to extrinsic vs. intrinsic motivation. All in all the webinar delivered a full serving of both solid information and provocative discussion.
Much thoughtful discussion on Digital Badges continues in the SCoPE community. As well, the second webinar on Digital Badges takes place tomorrow. Join us in the webinar and SCoPE seminar.
