[Spring Workshop 2023] Future-proof Learning Design: The Integration of Digital Literacy, Inclusive Tech, and AI

With the increased use of educational technology and awareness of concepts such as digital literacy, accessibility, and artificial intelligence (AI), more and more educational programs are exploring how to create the best student experience possible. A key factor is design, in particular design decisions that consider the technology available and the digital literacy of students and instructors. Does technology influence design, or does design drive decisions around technology? What is the design process that considers digital literacy, accessibility, and AI? How does delivery mode (e.g., online, blended, or face to face) influence design?
In this two-day workshop, we will showcase how instructors, education developers, and education technologists are approaching design. For example, we’ll explore how digital literacy, inclusive technology, and AI could be “baked” into courses and how instructors are supported in making design decisions around technology. We’ll also consider the ongoing communication and capacity-building at institutions around digital literacy, accessibility, and AI, such as how teaching and learning centres and libraries get the word out to instructors and students about new approaches and resources.
Some questions that may guide proposal submission include the following:
- Can you showcase a course module or activity that incorporates education technology in a novel way while integrating digital literacy and accessibility principles?
- Which principles or theories drive design decisions in your department or institution?
- As an educational developer or education technologist, how do you influence and support inclusive design decisions at your institution?
- As a librarian, what workshops or resources do you provide to instructors and students around technology, digital literacy, accessibility, and AI?
- How do ethical and legal factors apply to decision making around design with respect to digital literacy, accessibility, and AI?
- As a student advocate, how do you promote and support digital literacy, accessibility, academic integrity, and copyright at your institution?
- How does your institution respond to AI tools (e.g. ChatGPT)? How will new AI tools affect what happens in your learning spaces?
Presentations will be given in-person at KPU Richmond on June 1st & 2nd, 2023. Participants will be both in-person and online.
