[Member Profile] Meet Jennifer Kirkey from Douglas College

Tell us a bit about where you work and what you do.

I teach physics and astronomy at Douglas College and have done so for the last 30 years.

How long have you been involved in teaching and learning and/or ed technology?

More than 30 years.

My joke is that “physicists invented the internet” and I have been online for more than 40 years. I took my first computer course in 1978. I have formally been a teaching facilitator via the Instructional Skills Workshop for 25 years.  I was part of Douglas Development for five years about 15 years ago helping others become better teachers both face to face and using educational technology. I taught via video-conference for several years.  I have been an early adopter of educational technology. My latest project has been the use of Lightboard videos to enhance my courses. I am now a passionate advocate for Open Educational Resources – specifically, Pressbooks and the use of H5P inside that platform.

What’s one thing you really love about the work you do?

I love the fact that I can share my enthusiasm for the topics that I teach.  I get paid to expose student to the wonders of the universe.

How long have you been a member of ETUG?

MMMM..forever? Never?  I do not remember.  I have attended some conferences and supported the work.

What do you like best about this community and its activities?

Educational technology has such a benefit for students and instructors, so keep up the good work.

Do you have a favourite ETUG memory?

I really loved the “Back to the Future” theme at your recent conference.  Keep up that sense of humour. I enjoy hanging out with other techies.  When we share, we are stronger.

Do you have any special interests/hobbies?

I kayak, but I was not on the water at all last year due to an issue with my shoulder.  Fine cooking is a hobby and my colleagues enjoy a regular supply of cookies. My husband works in the wine industry and we enjoy going to wine tastings and on wine tours in the summer.

Anything special you want to ask or share with members?

Have fun with your job. Educational technology can enhance learning, but keep your eye on the heart of what we do, which is students and better learning.
