[ETUG 25] Flashback Friday – 2017

As ETUG celebrates 25 years, we are taking the opportunity every Friday to dig into our archives and celebrate our 25-year history. Today’s Flashback Friday continues back in time to 2017.

It’s 2017

It’s 2017, the co-Chairs of SCETUG are Jason Toal, SFU and Janine Hirtz, UBC Okanagan.  We head to the sunny Okanagan for the ETUG Spring Jam: Education by Design to share innovative approaches and processes used in designing for education and to work on real-world wicked-design problems/challenges. We even had a music jam/hootenanny as evidenced here:

Dr. Peter Newbury, Director, Centre for Teaching and Learning, UBC Okanagan was the opening keynote on “How (you can help) People Learn”. Here’s a few resources and photos as well.
For the Fall 2017 workshop, Vancouver Community College is our host and it is a stellar one at that with an important theme on everyone’s mind: “Digital Spaces: Pressing Buttons, Pushing Boundaries”. Mike Caulfied, Director, Blended and Networked Learning, at the Washington State University is the keynote speaking on “Six Traps of Online Information Literacy (and a few solutions)”. His keynote is followed by a hands-on workshop to apply some of the ideas he presented. Clint shares details and a recording of Mike’s keynote in this excellent workshop summary.
In the afternoon, Etuggers presented Pecha Kuchas on the topic of digital literacy and we had breakout discussion tables or “birds of a feather”. One of the Pecha Kuchas was on our successful ETUG experiment of the 2016 first B.C. offering of the 12 Apps of Christmas.
Also of note, is the news of changes in SCETUG leadership with me (Leva) stepping down as the ETUG Community Steward.
As things come to a close for the year, SCETUG provides some final thoughts in this report on 2016-17.
