Microlearn at JIBC

The Foundations to Medical Emergency Services microlearn course was created to provide an innovative curriculum digitization model to meet a growing labour market demand within healthcare for Paramedics. The development of the Online Foundations to Emergency Medical Services (FEMS) was a collaborative effort involving the JIBC project team, Huu-ay-aht First Nations community, Elders and was supported through funding from Indigenous Services Canada.
The course prepares Indigenous learners for employment within pre-hospital healthcare, and enhance their abilities to engage in more advanced healthcare education. The modular design and flexible structure responds to an existing gap in access to healthcare education within Indigenous communities by allowing students to remain in their community while they study, progress through material at their own pace and engage with interactive culturally relevant curriculum. Watch our video explaining this curriculum model.

What’s Next?
Now that the pilot project is complete – the Microlearn EMR course will become a component of the general EMR program at JIBC. Based on feedback from the pilot, learners will gain access to the site further in advance of the course and can maintain access to the course long after completing it. They can continue to access the valuable video resources and other material.
Ultimately, other programs at the JIBC can easily adopt this model and create their own microlearn courses to enhance their current offerings.
