[Festival of Learning 2018] Update #4
Contributed by Terri Bateman, Co-chair of FoL 2018
The Festival of Learning is now less than six weeks away! There is a lot happening behind the scenes, which you can see taking shape on the schedule. Log in or create an account to start planning the sessions you don’t want to miss.
Monday morning opens with our keynote Jesse Stommel. We are very happy to welcome Jesse back to Vancouver. His blog, his twitter feed and his work with Hybrid Pedagogy and the Digital Pedagogy lab make him such a great fit for our conference and our theme. He is also looking forward to attending sessions and engaging with us.
Our Monday night social event starts early on the 19th floor of the conference hotel. There are 360 degree views of the city and mountains. There’s a dinner package available and there will be some trivia and prizes followed by a very special presentation featuring the 3Ds (Doodle, Dance, Disco). They are trying to keep a little mystery around their performance but from the hashtags #what moves you, and, #BOOM you can imagine, it’s going to be a party.
For the day two plenary session we’ve confirmed Jonny Morris to moderate a student panel: What is the next level of thinking and planning we need to do to help students thrive in post-secondary education? In this multi-layered discussion we’ll start off with student voices followed by a response panel of academic leaders to acknowledge that those voices have been heard. In the third phase there will be an opportunity for contributions from the audience.
Day three keynote Monique Gray Smith of Little Drum Consulting will give the closing keynote. Monique “is an award winning author, international speaker and sought after consultant. Her career has focused on fostering paradigm shifts that emphasize the strength and resiliency of the First Peoples in Canada. She is well known for her storytelling, spirit of generosity and focus on resilience.”
These are just the plenaries, I haven’t even gotten into the sessions – So. Many. Sessions. Posters, design, open education, liberating structures, scholarship, technology, and more, all revolving around our theme of care in education. Check the sched for more information about each session.
If you haven’t registered yet, don’t worry. You still can. REGISTER here.
Don’t forget to book your hotel if you need one. The Pinnacle is sold out at the special Festival rate, but regular rate rooms are still available. There are also some other special rate options available at the Listel and the Ramada. Here are all the details.
Also, remember that there are quiet reflection spaces, meeting spaces for your group get-togethers, yoga in the morning, guided walks, and FREE childcare all built into the Festival of Learning.
The excitement is building. Can’t wait to see you there!
