[Member Profile] Meet Bob Preston of Camosun College

Contributed by Emily Schudel, Camosun College.
Tell us a bit about where you work and what you do.

  • I work at eLearning, in the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) at Camosun College. I am the glue that keeps this place together.  My official job is web analyst for Distributed Education (now called eLearning).  I provide D2L support, web development for D2L and other tools we support, multimedia integration into D2L (video, audio, etc.), as well as teaching the finer points of Camtasia, Office Mix, and other software.

How long have you been involved in teaching and learning and ed technology?

  • Well, I’ve been at the College for 16 years. I was originally an instructional tech in Visual Arts – I taught students the technical aspects of 5-6 different mediums, and now I have been within CETL for 5-6 years.

What’s one thing you really love about the work you do?

  • The people. Without the people I work with, it would not be as much fun to come to work.

How long have you been a member of ETUG?

  • I became a member of ETUG soon after I started with eLearning, so about 5-6 years.

What do you like best about this community and its activities?

  • It’s good to get a group of people working in the same discipline together – there’s not enough of people coming together to talk about their work.

Do you have a favorite ETUG memory?

  • Various presentations showing grace under technological breakdowns pressure!

What would you like ETUG provide more of in terms of benefits/value to members? Any input or help you want to ask members to provide?

  • More in-depth technical exploration of various tools, for example how an institution is using a technology like D2L (more technical admin), Kaltura, etc. – the technical side of ed tech. Also I would like to see more workshops in places other than downtown Vancouver.

Do you have any special interests/hobbies?

  • Wine. Photography.
