Contributed by Janine Hirtz, UBC Okanagan
Brian Powell is an e-learning Instructional Support Specialist with the Centre for Teaching and Learning at the Okanagan campus of the University of British Columbia (UBC). He helps faculty find flexible and effective alternatives to lecture-based instruction, and helps them learn to use the supporting technologies.
Brian began as a teacher in Quebec and overseas. After a Masters degree at Concordia, he supported course material development and teaching with technology at UBC in Arts ISIT, at Athabasca University, at UBC in the Faculty of Medicine, with the Canadian Forces, with Vancouver Island Health Authority, and lastly at Douglas College. He is passionate about making teaching and learning more effective for teachers and learners.
Brian attended ETUG for the first time in the fall of 2014, and thinks of ETUG as a welcoming tight-knit community where you can approach and consult with all ranks of professionals in your field. The activities put on by ETUG provide timely discussion and support for topics relevant to its members. On memorable activity for Brian was the visit to Vancouver Public Library drop-in video facilities. Participation in ETUG is encouraged and Brian has been able to share his experiences through a presentation and with photography at the events.
