[Institutional Report] BCcampus Open Education
This post contributed by Leva Lee
It’s been an amazingly busy, blockbuster Spring for BCcampus Open Education. Here are some things we’d like to share with you:
BC Open Textbooks
Please check out our collection of 52 Open Textbooks
Also we are always looking for reviewers for our open textbooks and, in particular, seeking authors for a 1st and 2nd year Political Science textbook. Please contact us opentext@bccampus.ca if you can assist!
Open Textbook Booksprint
The BCcampus Open Education team of Clint Lalonde and Amanda Coolidge led a booksprint with BC faculty from June 9-12th and created a 1st year Geography textbook in 4 days. Read all about it:
- The 5 Rules of textbook development
- Open pedagogy at the Open Textbook Sprint
- Post-sprint BC in a global context
- A sprint through the pages
- How to turn a great idea into an open textbook in just four days

BCOER Hackfest
The BCOER, a newly formed group of BC post-secondary librarians, gathered together in May for a one day hackfest to develop guides and support materials for OER. Read more about it!
Professional Learning
BETreat Canada
In partnership with BCcampus two BEtreat workshops are coming to Canada! Join us for a unique experience of engaging, connecting, and learning. In a retreat setting we explore opportunities and challenges facing people whose work involves the support and cultivation of networks, communities of practice, or social learning systems. The workshops will be held Oct 7-10 (State of the Art) and Oct 14 -17 (Cutting Edge). The facilitators of the workshops are Beverly Wenger-Trayner and Etienne Wenger-Trayner. Instructional Skills Workshop Online
This past academic year we ventured into a new area for BCcampus — online workshops. While we have been hosting online learning opportunities for many years, they have always been very informal, with no registration or obligation to participate. We awarded certificates of completion to 17 participants in the Instructional Skills Workshop Online (ISWO), a CC BY licensed workshop originally developed by Royal Roads University. We followed this with a newly developed Facilitator Development Workshop Online (FDWO), awarding certificates to 8 individuals who plan to facilitate the ISWO. Future plans include continuing to refine the workshops and finding more ways to bring together educators across the province to advance our work in online teaching and learning.
