[T.e.l.l. January Summary] Developing EdMedia Practitioners through mentorship

January’s TELL Session, “Developing EdMedia Practitioners through mentorship”, was hosted by Jason Toal and Lisa O’Neill of the Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC) at Simon Fraser University (SFU). Their session focused on the success of their EDMedia Protégé Program which supports faculty who are interested in being better media creators.
Jason and Lisa gave a thorough overview of the program which helps faculty embed media in learning through media assets developed by teaching faculty, utilizing media mentors, and focused on course outcomes/objectives. Currently, they accept six faculty members (cross-discipline) from across the University for the ten-week program. There are three phases to the program. The first phase is a series of 1 hour workshops, followed by one-one support, and it concludes with a showcase and a peer impact award.

Faculty receive a $250.00 stipend for the participation in the program and are expected to complete the following:

1. Two digital artifacts for a course or courses.
2. Detailed lesson plan describing HOW the media will be used in the course, context and content are important.
3. Share the resource through a creative commons license.

The program has been well received by faculty and, in its third (next) instance, will incorporate a blended delivery model.
