Who: John Born
John Born is the Educational Technology Help Desk Coordinator at the BCIT Learning and Teaching Centre. He is one of the newest members of BCIT Educational Technology Support with just 6 months on the team. He comes to BCIT with 8 years’ experience at the University of New Brunswick Teaching and Learning Centre and as an Instructor in the Multimedia Studies Program at UNB. Before working at UNB, he spent 3 years as an Audio Technician at the LearnStream Courseware company.
John Born has been working and playing as a sound designer ever since he got his first 4-track recorder and microphone in 1991. He is a graduate of the Multimedia Studies Program at UNB, the Sound and Visual Media Program at VFS, and is finishing his Masters in Education in Instructional Design with a focus on the role of sound in education.
John is actively working and training in sound with his own company Born Audio which specializes in Audio production for Film, TV, and Web development.
Session Description:  Sound in Education
The tools for sharing audio online in an educational context are quickly changing for students and Instructors. The ability to use audio clips as a way to enhance lesson plans, quizzing, Instructor feedback, and student self-assessment have greatly been enhanced with accessible audio web tools.  One example of a recording, file sharing, and community building site is Sound Cloud. Sound Cloud allows you to start your own audio podcasting channel and share embedded audio files as online course content and discussion posts.  Audio web tools are not the only option, software like Audacity and Garage Band allow users access to editing features, special effects and multi-tracking for more sophisticated audio content.
