Meet Dennis Yip from the Justice Institute of BC
Naz Maghsoudi, Coordinator, Student & Faculty Development,
Technology Enabled Teaching and Learning at the JIBC is a member of SCETUG and recently interviewed colleague Dennis Yip for this month’s member profile.
Tell us a bit about where you work and what you do?
I work at the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) as Senior Web Specialist. I have been in this role since September 2011. Most of my work of late has been developing online courses for various schools/departments at the JIBC using Blackboard and WordPress platforms. Also, been working on the development of JIBC’s 2nd iOS app called HazAware. Search for ‘jibc’ in the iTunes store soon. Shameless plug, I know.
How long been involved in teaching and Learning and ed technology?
Computers and technology has been a part of my life as far back as I can remember (specifically when my parents bought me an IBM PS/1 286 compuer). But when it comes to formally working in ed technology, this didn’t happen until I joined the JIBC in 2008. My primary roles in various capacities have creating/maintaining online courses.
What’s one thing you really love about the work you do?
The people and the technology!
How long have you been a member of ETUG?
I became a member since the Spring 2012 Workshop. Yeah – a newbie.
What do you like best about this community and its activities?
Meeting the people behind the work, sharing of ideas and most importantly the ETUG group makes me think outside the box and re-energizes me. I’ve lost count how many times I’ve said, “Duh, why didn’t I think of that?”
Do you have a favorite ETUG memory?
So far my favorite presentation has been Mike Minion’s ‘Quest for the Grail’. I loved how passionate he was about using cost-effective technology to bring students remotely into the classroom.
What would you like to ETUG provide more of in terms of benefits/value to members? Any input or help you want to ask members to provide?
The value is outstanding – keep up the awesome work. I look forward to the workshops!
Do you have any special interests/hobbies?
Photography & Slideshow Production (wedding, retirements and other special events)
Anything special you what to ask or share with members?
I have double-jointed fingers? Does that count?
