This fall you are invited to the Little (Work) Shop of Horrors to tell your tales of failures, flops and edtech experiments gone bad. As a grassroots driven community, one of our key strengths is our ability to share practical experience and what we’ve learned hacking, tinkering, experimenting – and failing. Join us on Friday, October 28th and bring your “tricks”, “treats”, missteps, and lessons learned to share with BC’s Educational Technology community.
Our morning session will begin with our keynote and followed by a series of lightning sessions – rapid-fire storytelling of the infamous kind.
In the afternoon, there will be a variety of posters and demos for you to visit, a veritable offering of “tricks” and “treats” where you can learn some new hacks, get in some hands-on and excellent networking.
Possible topics may include (but are not limited to…)
“Tales from the Online course”
“The the Mystery of Missing Scholarship”
“Monster Mash-ups”
“Invasion of the Bandwidth Snatchers”
“A Nightmare on a Twitter feed”
“Feel the fear; Do it anyway”
“All work and no play makes edtech a dull toy”
“How I learned to stop worrying and love the web”
“What we’ve learned from failure, chaos and lolcats”
“Fear and Loathing of technology”
WORKSHOP FORMAT
We have one large room, a funky industrial space called the Hangar at the Centre for Digital Media. There will be two session formats as noted below and the following proposed Schedule.
I. Lightning Session
“Lightning round” where each speaker will have 7 minutes each to share their tales of fails and perseverance and scary stories of edtech experiments. If there is time left over we can open the floor for more stories and discussion.
II. Demo/Poster Session
Conference booth type set up for “edtech experiments”: promos, hands-on activities, participatory demos, making stuff and breaking stuff! All types of sessions welcome. Each presenter gets a space for either a one or two hour time slot. Participants “choose their own adventure” as they wander the spaces seeking “tricks” and “tricks”.
CRITERIA FOR SELECTION
Session proposals will be reviewed with the following considerations; Include a brief description of the session, including the following:
- Relevance of topic to audience & workshop theme,
- Importance of topic to teaching and learning with technology,
- Relevant theory, research or practice informing session,
- Learning outcomes and methods to be used in the session.
- Interactivity – elements in your session that will encourage attendee participation
- Appeal to diversity of ETUG audience
SHARING WHAT WE DO
- Facilitators and participants are encouraged to post and share their work online. When posting to social media, please use #etug
- All artifacts from ETUG events are openly licensed according to the terms of Creative Commons 4.0 [http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/]. This includes photographs, audio and video recordings, and session materials from the workshop for the purpose of sharing via the ETUG and BCcampus web sites and associated social media accounts.

Our anticipated number of participants is 150. Wireless internet access will be available for participants.
